Folklore Cortona

During the year Cortona presents many demonstrations. Among these: the fair of the Antique Copper in Signorelli Square, between the end of April and the beginning of May, the Archidado tournament, a historical performances with medieval dresses; it is about the celebrations for Francesco Casali and Antonia Salimbeni wedding, nobles from Siena. All the Quintieris took part to it, challenging each other during a competition with the crossbow, in the newly-weds honour. At the end of the competition only Quintieri wins and brings to his quarter the “Gold Verretta”, during May and June. Between the end of August and the beginning of September you can find at Vagnotti Palace the national Market Exhibition of the antique piece of fourniture. It started during the 60's. During the summer season you can also find classical and chamber music concerts in Signorelli Square. In August there is the Tuscan Festival: it started only for the classical music, but later it was enriched with figurative arts manifestations and body welfare. Finally the gastronomic festivals; among these the most important is the Chianina steak festival, which takes place in the Parterre gardens during the mid-August holiday of every year: the historical commemorations and the country festivals. It is also easy to reach many important places, both from the historical and artistical point of view: Florence, Siena, Perugia, Assisi, Arezzo...
